Negative World Podcast 023 - Poutine Poon Tang

The prodigal son Guillaume has returned to host episode 23 of the Negative World podcast! Listen to RoyKoopa64 and SirMasterSephiroth speak on the podcast for the very first time! Also, DrFinkelstein is still hanging around.

The gang talks about the games they've been playing: Pushmo, Mario Kart 7, Rocksmith, more Kirby and Rayman Origins.

Things get serious when the discussion turns to winter levels in games, what makes a game series faithful to itself, reboots and remakes, and Nintendo's QA process!

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The wacky music throughout the podcast can only come from Rayman Origins!

Negative World Podcast 022 - GuiBA

Yes, it's been two weeks already! DrFinkelstein hosts for the second time in a row along with Ploot and PogueSquadron in this 'saturated with greatness' podcast. In the first hour you'll find that the guys take care of the almost obligatory Zelda: Skyward Sword discussion being that all three have conquered the game. In the the second hour you'll find a lot of variety!

Ploot explains why you Americans now have NO EXCUSE not to buy Xenoblade Chronicles, PogueSquadron heads a discussion of heroic proportions about superhero games, and DrFinkelstein gets semi-old school as he gets the gang to ponder some "What If" titles they'd like to see from the Gameboy Advance on the 3DS Virtual Console.

During the Zelda discussion, (from the 36 minute mark, lasting for about six minutes) the guys discuss some boss battles and later game stuff. It's probably the most spoilerish part of the discussion, so you have been warned!

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The music throughout the podcast is taken from Skyward Sword, Xenoblade Chronicles, Batman (NES), and Golden Sun.

Negative World Podcast 021 - Someone To Bake Them Evil Cakes

Negative World is at it AGAIN (will they ever quit? sheesh!) with another podcast for your listening pleasure. Cryojin and Gamewizard65 join DrFinkelstein during his first hosting gig ever! They start off with some discussion about Twilight Princess and Gears of War 3, only to finish it off old school with Donkey Kong 94' and DuckTales 2 chatter.

Then, the crew discusses the social stigmas found in the gaming community before launching into an all out drool-fest over Super Mario 3D Land. Finally, DrFink yet again introduces a topic where he agrees with both sides of the argument and thus negates himself in a rousing discussion about the Mario Kart series and why it hasn't gone full throttle in a "Brawl-esque" manner.

From the 00:47:53 minute mark thru the 00:49:07 minute mark are some light Super Mario 3D Land post-game spoilers.
From the 01:14:19 minute mark thru the 01:15:52 minute mark are some Mario Kart 7 New Character spoilers.
You have been warned, both here and in the podcast!

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The music throughout the podcast is taken from the Mario Kart series.

Negative World Podcast 020 - Punching keeses in the face

A very special episode of the Negative World Podcast this week! Special guest Julius Riecke talks about the ongoing development of his homebrew NES game, Super Bat Puncher! Play the demo now to have fun with physics and punch bats with a giant spring-loaded boxing glove! And don't miss bonus Riecke after the closing music...

Then, Guillaume and Stephen a.k.a. DrFinkelstein find themselves alone to talk about Mario Kart Wii, Picross DS, Layton and Kirby.

Moving on to the topics, Stephen hopes to discuss The Legend of Zelda franchise with other excited fans, but finds himself locked in a room with only "killjoy" Guillaume. To make matters worse, Guillaume then decides to rant about an iPhone game no one cares about, and proceeds to mercilessly attack the capitalist system in Animal Crossing, another one of Stephen's favorite franchises!

Most unusual: the theme music comes directly from the Super Bat Puncher soundtrack by Dave Harris. The end music turns out to be an OCRemix by our very own Cubed777! And of course, the music throughout the episode comes straight to you from the Zelda franchise.

Negative World Podcast 019 - Accidentally relevant

A week in the making! In this scary Negative World Podcast episode, Alaska_Gamer talks about the disturbing Alien VS Predator 2, Guillaume talks about the spooky first NES Castlevania as well as the eerie Castlevania X: Rondo of Blood, and Anand discusses his grotesque Nintendogs + Cats adventures.

The gang then talks about Western RPGs turning into action games in order to sell better, the necessity of game critics, and predictable or unpredictable enemy patterns in old school action games. Featuring bonus talk about cooperative action!

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and ghoul, Zero. Those creepy notes you hear are coming to you from beyond the grave. Also, Castlevania.

Negative World Podcast 018 - Weak to fog

Yes, really: it's another Negative World Podcast episode. Guillaume can't believe what a jerk Jim Sterling is and discusses BloodRayne Betrayal, Paleo returns after a long absence to talk about Fragile Dreams, and newcomer Chris "Rebonack" Dunn has decided to check out this TMNT fad all the kids are into with TMNT3 on the Game Boy. (You can hear even more of his ramblings on the tvandlust.net podcast!)

They then discuss what makes someone stick with games one finds mediocre, being obsessed about a particular game, and what makes a good superhero video games. Side conversations include drawing sexy pics of Sonic and being pigeonholed into a topic by Guillaume!

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The wonderful music throughout the podcast is taken from Super Mario Galaxy.

Negative World Podcast 017 - Eating worms in the school yard

You want to hear about games? That's great, because Kriswright, ludist210 and Guillaume won't stop rambling about Kirby Mass Attack, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, and Jerry Rice & Nitus' Dog Football! Special appearance by Stephmonster, the first (gasp) female to grace the Negative World podcast with her presence!

Then, the crew attacks various topics (and each other!): Kris (and his wife!) collect games, ludist210 has the future of music games on his mind, and Guillaume wonders if Sega even ever knew what good game design is. Sorry for the rambling!

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The funky beats throughout the podcast are from the "classic" game Toejam & Earl.

Negative World Podcast 016 - Games games games

Negative World Podcast is evolving! Zero, ploot and Guillaume start by talking about the games they have been playing: Ghost Trick, God of War 3, The Longest Journey, The Legend of Zelda, Space Invaders Extreme 2, Gargoyle's Quest and Demon's Crest! Whew.

As if it weren't enough, they also dig into the topics of the day: how special circumstances may influence our enjoyment of certain games, hacking your Wii and general homebrew talk, and the announced free GBA games for Ambassadors: Mario VS Donkey Kong, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island, Metroid Fusion and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$.

Tons and tons of content. And bear with us and the poor sound at the beginning: it gets better.

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The rest of the soundtrack is taken from Yoshi's Island.

Negative World Podcast 015 - NYCast

After a month-long break (missed us?) explained by poor planning on the host's part, the Negative World Podcast returns to tell you all about the International Negative World Meet-up 2011 that took place in the Big Apple

Listen to Anand, Mr_Mustache, Abdooooo and Guillaume talk about what it is like to meet with people you've never seen before, but have talked to for years; and discuss party games, arcade games, food, karaoke, and hot, sweaty (censored).

Thanks go to Mrs_Mustache and Jargon and his wife for participating in this very special trip, and HUGE thanks go to CPA_Wei and Deathly_Hallows, the New York City residents who had to put up with us.

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The rest of the soundtrack is taken from Mario Kart 64.

Negative World Podcast 014 - Legend of the Sentient Quesadillas

The Negative World Podcast welcomes Andrew Eisen (the "Nintendo why won't you take my money?" guy) to revisit the Operation Rainfall topic. Along with Guillaume, Chrisbg99 (Chris) and the fashionably late Xbob42 (Rico), we also discuss the 3DS price drop and Nintendo's situation in general, and also choosing the other gender in games that allow us to do so.

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The rest of the soundtrack is taken from Sonic the Hedgehog.

For the first (and last) time, five NWers appear on the podcast! Listen to Hendrik (Jargon), Andrew (Zero), Santi (GelatinousEncore), Anand and Guillaume talk over each other as they attempt to discuss Metroid Prime, ignored gems on the Wii, the future of 2D games, and the evil of downloadable titles!

In this episode, gamewizard65 and Alaska_Gamer make their podcast debut! Along with Paleo_Orca and, sigh, Guillaume, they discuss Operation Rainfall and the weird publishing decisions of Nintendo, preferred graphical styles, Ocarina of Time 3DS and other remakes, and sim games (mostly of the "god game" variety).

Negative World Podcast 011 - E3!

This special episode of the Negative World podcast is about one thing and one thing only (and yet still manages to be longer than any previous episode somehow): the Electronic Entertainment Expo!

Listen to Guillaume and TriforceBun talk about their experience at E3, getting their hands on demos for games that will not come out for months! Carlosrox plays the role of the everyman who did not get to go to E3 but really wishes he had.

The Wii U, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario Kart 3DS, Super Mario, Kid Icarus, Rhythm Heaven, Resident Evil Revelations and many, many more are discussed. Perfect for those 2 hours and a half commutes! Hey, we had to make up for a 3 weeks long absence, right?

Negative World Podcast 010 - Shtooloo?

The Negative World Podcast celebrates its tenth episode by doing nothing special at all! Celebrate with us in much the same way by listening to it!

Warerare starts us off by asking what E3 represents for us. We are discussing not so much the even itself as we are discussing how we feel about it. Yes, grown men talking about their feelings. The Negative World podcast has taken estrogen and is liking it.

Guillaume, who DOES know the proper pronunciation of Cthulhu thank you very much, discusses licensed games simply to have an excuse to use the music from the moon level of Duck Tales as a transition.

Finally Paleo flat out asks us to justify paying for the Virtual Console when it's so easy and so free to get these games elsewhere. Is the answer "just because"? Listen and find out!

As usual, the music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero.

Negative World Podcast 009 - Dumb kids with more money than sense

On this episode, only three people could make it, but that's okay: they ramble a lot!

The ever topical Anand ponders about the possibilities that Project Café could bring to the table if the rumored specs are true, especially the touch screen integrated in the controller. Does he have a better answer than just checkers and solitaire? You will have to listen to the end to find out!

Guillaume, ever repentant, tries to be positive for once in his life and asks about the positive things gaming has brought YOU, the listener. He is immediately accused of being stealthily negative.

Finally kriswright, ever the newb, decides to simply talk about what he loves the most in the whole world: pinball. He does not, however, deign answer why he simply doesn't marry it. Kris also tackles the big question of the death of arcades and whether they could be brought back.

Negative World Podcast 008 - Bear with us

On this chapter of the Negative World Podcast, listen to four Nintendo nerds discuss video games, for a change!

Guillaume wonders what happened to role-playing games, and role-playing gamers. Hear him admit to the world that he may have judged Final Fantasy VII unfairly (but its clones still suck)

Chrisbg99, inspired by Negative World's Adventure Island review, asks about difficulty in games: most of us can agree that gamers have it too easy these days, but do we really want to go back to the days of hair-pulling difficulty?

Octorockin, ever curious to learn more about the gaming industry, asks why more games don't include special features: commentary tracks, documentaries, and other bits of info about the process of making the game we're playing.

Finally, Marsh shares his conclusions as to why he is not more interested in the 3DS than he is and asks why we play video games. Everyone seems to agree that playing games is simply rad, save for one. Can you guess who it is?

As usual, the music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. (The lyrics are gone this time).

Negative World Podcast Episode 007 - Back in glasses-free 2D

It's back to the usual format for the Negative World crew in the wake of the 3DS launch.

Guillaume is forced to accept a truth that had been staring him in the face for a long time, now, but that he cannot escape any longer: he is the last person on Earth to still care about the Wii's Virtual Console. The rest of the crew manages to muster some excitement for the potential of the 3DS virtual console, however!

Deathly_Hallows makes up for his absence in the special 3DS episode (due to mic problems) by talking about Ridge Racer 3D, as well as backing the host's positive opinion of Steel Diver.

JKR (of Fred the Monkey fame!) decides that for his first appearance on the podcast, he should tackle the very non-controversial topic of Nintendo's stance on the iTunes App Store and its effect on the gaming industry for developers and gamers.

Finally GelatinousEncore, having already discussed his favorite Nintendo franchise in the first episode, decides to talk about his second favorite, Metroid, and the franchise's decent into linearity and female obedience.

The opening music comes from your lovable despotic site owner, Zero, with original lyrics by JKR!
The closing music is an awesome remix of the Brinstar theme from Super Metroid, from NWer Autokymatic.

Everything no one ever really needed to know about the 3DS! This episode is packed with so much great content, it had to be split in two!

Negative World Podcast - Episode 006-1 - 3DS Special

In part 1 Casper, Warerare, Paleo and Pandareus discuss being an early adopter, the 3DS hardware and the built-in software. Discover how the 3DS has turned Pandareus into a creepy stalker in spite of himself, find out that Warerare's Streetpass Plaza is a sausage fest, and learn that Casper is envious of both of them for these things.

Negative World Podcast - Episode 005 - Hot for a rotund Mario

Nintendo nerds gather once more to discuss the topics they love most!

DrFinkelstein finally returns to the podcast he helped conceive! It is a decision he may yet regret, as it apparently shattered all of the convictions he had about Achievements in games!

What the smerd!? We explore the seedy world of gaming magazines, specifically Nintendo Power, and wonder if they have their use still, in a world where games don't have codes or obtuse design anymore. Are Nintendo Power writers still not allowed to say anything nice about the Genesis?

Pandareus thinks it's a good idea to analyze Mario 3DS based on 4 screenshots and a logo. The crew for today's podcast is a weird bunch. "Floating blocks are cool"? What?

Finally, GameDadGrant decides to talk about the differences between Nintendo's handheld and console strategies. The crew gets off-topic and decides to mock each other for the DS model they use or for not having played Link's Awakening (a character flaw that many will be able to solve once that game is available on the Virtual Console service!).

Negative World Podcast - Episode 004 - Really Winging It

Triumphing over busy schedules and general apathy, the Negative World crew brings you the fourth installment of its epic podcasting saga.

Peppy‑le‑Fox asks the all-important question: is backwards compatibility really as important a thing to have as all the whining on the internet when a new console doesn't have it would lead one to believe?

Pandareus scratches his head and wonders what a Nintendo gamer is supposed to go out and buy during this Wii drought. No, he's not looking for something to play, just like many gamers his shelves are crumbling under piles of unplayed games. But for compulsive game acquirers everywhere, this drought situation is untenable!

Mr_Mustache could have talked about a variety of topics, being the multidimensional onion that he is, but it was made clear to him that if he didn't talk about sports games on the Negative World podcast, no one ever would. Stay after the end song for bonus sports talk!

Finally, Paleo_Orca returns for a second appearance to try and figure out what Augmented Reality is good for, beyond virtual pets and shooters. Will he find the answer he is looking for? And did he really just manage to be on a podcast without once mentioning marine life?

As usual, leave your comments on the podcast, its host, its guests and its topics on NegativeWorld.org! Or, be a weirdo and post them on Facebook or Twitter instead.

Negative World Podcast - Episode 003 - (laughs)

You are listening once again to the Negative World Podcast for some reason. Let Anandxxx, Triforcebun (author/artist of Brawl in the Family!), the awfully quiet Abdooooo and as always your host Pandareus delight you with their varied topics: Nintendo's Blue Ocean strategy; how RPG elements are dumbing down games; the best uses of motion controls (though as expected we spend 50% of the time bitching about them) and do lives, continues and gameovers have their place in games today still?

The music is different this time but still comes from your lovable despotic site owner, Zero. And stay tuned after the podcast for a surprise celebrity guest!

Negative World Podcast - Episode 002 - Sophomore Slump

The Negative World Podcast hits its sophomore slump as a Pandareus confident in his abilities to lead a podcast by himself gets hit with a harsh dose of reality! Hopefully the magic of editing will make it so that no one but the people there (Paleo, Zero and Warerare) will know what really went on on that fateful day.

Before launching into each participant's topic Zero, lord and master of NegativeWorld.org, explains briefly the origins of everyone's favorite Nintendo site/forum, and even hints at future plans for the site. That's exclusive info, folks!

Then we discuss Paleo's excuse to bring up Endless Ocean, educational games and how they could motivate kids to learn more about certain topics, if only those games were of a higher quality! Zero has a lot to say about this topic as well, as teaching kids is his day job! I think that means we can legitimately call ourselves "a panel of expert". No plural.

Zero then asks each person to talk about an overlooked game of their choice. Who picked 999, Deadly Creatures, Retro Game Challenge and Disaster: Day of Crisis? Only one way to find out!

Pandareus thinks it's a good idea to ask to a bunch of people without any actual experience designing games about game difficulty and the challenge of designing games that will satisfy both gaming savants and newcomers. Selectable difficulty levels are all well and good in action games, but what kind of good does that do to Nintendo who primarily makes platformers and adventure games?

We save the best for last as Warerare recounts his day at an even where he was chased by zombies and got to play the 3DS. You are so totally jealous right now. Listen as the three other participants attempt to live vicariously through him by asking him why he looked so damn happy on that photo of him playing Face Raiders.

As usual, the best part of the podcast is when no one has started talking yet and a cool intro tune is playing. There is more where that came from, so why not check it out?

Negative World Podcast - Episode 001

A brave crew of experienced message board posters on an incredible journey go beyond the keyboard and dare discuss face to face (not literally).

Listen with amazement as GelatinousEncore, CPA Wei, DrFinkelstein and Pandareus explore topics in a much more superficial way than they would have been in a regular forum thread. But it is being delivered in a newish format that allows you to get your dose of Negative World on the go, therefore is is better. Don't try to stop progress, you won't be able to!

After a musical intro composed by NegativeWorld's lord and master Zero, smile at the ineptitude of Pandareus who foolishly believed that listening to hundreds of podcasts somehow qualified him to host one! Seeing as he basically lives on the boards, you would expect him to be able to describe Negative World better. It's okay, however, as there is no way anyone not already familiar with the board will even hear him. Listen to him clumsily presenting his topic, Wiiware, first claiming that the games are fantastic only to go on about the ways the service is not.

Your eyes will be wide with amazement as you discover the true extent of DrFinkelstein's love for Animal Crossing! Nintendo has broken his heart by releasing a Wii version that lived up to the series' enormous potential, but that hasn't stopped him from coming up with ways to reignite the old flame. Hear him passionately describe them to three other dudes who only bought the GameCube version of the game for the NES classics it contained, or never touched the series at all.

Things get more grave and serious as CPA Wei presents his topic, the end of the Wii's and the DS's livespan. Our crew attempts to answer the question: Is Kirby truly a harbinger of death for a Nintendo home console? Pandareus comes prepared with a list of coming-late-in-the-gen games on past Nintendo consoles, but then forgets to make the point he was getting at. Thankfully the rest of the crew picks up the slack with their insights.

Finally, we prepare to close the podcast the same way Nintendo prepares to put their handhelds to sleep when they've run their course: Pokémon. GelatinousEncore regales us with his tales of playing his imported copy of Pokémon White, and comes up with 5 ways to improve the franchise. The whole crew then comes to the conclusion that there are way more than just five ways to end the stagnation, and seem to agree that they wouldn't be all that hard to implement. Nintendo is being lazy, and we care!

The show ends about as gracefully as it started. Breathe a sigh of relief as Zero's beats signal that the torture is over, but stay tuned for a smerdprise.
